People come for many different reasons but generally it is because something is not working in their lives. They may feel stuck and wish to talk in confidence with someone. Sometimes people do not know why they feel the way they do and therap can help you understand what is happening for you.
Sometimes difficulties that might be happening can have their origins in many different experiences in a person's lifetime, and part of the work is addressing this. It may take some time to unravel these difficulties, as they have built up over a considerable period of time. Having said that the number of therapy sessions that may be required depends on each individual.
In becoming a professional psychotherapist, I have experienced hours of personal therapy as a client and understand the difficulty in opening up about painful experiences, shameful thoughts and feelings and a fear of being judged. I have also experienced the benefit in doing so and value the investment I made in my own emotional and psychological health. I will support you to go at your own pace.
The number of sessions will depend on your individual needs. During the initial session we will consider the nature of the issues being brought and decide together on the most appropriate number of sessions. Initially six consecutive sessions are recommended to benefit from the therapeutic work. However, the client is always at the centre of any decision in this regard. I will work closely with you to identify the change you would like to see.
In the initial session you and I will try to understand what difficulties you are experiencing and discuss what it is you are hoping to achieve through making use of therapy. A contract is agreed between both of us about times, fees, confidentiality and any questions you may have for me regarding how I work can be asked. I will support and help you reach clarity and understanding and a way through your difficult experiences. You can find more information in How I Work.
Although it is a working relationship, it is similar to other relationships where you click and feel comfortable with the other person, or you feel it is not right for you. I like to keep an open conversation around this until you have decided either way, as I believe it is an important factor in the outcome of counselling and psychotherapy. I support my clients in making their decision.
